Incident: iOS 2.5.0 application not usable after upgrade to API 5.8.0
Incident summary
On December 29th, 2025, an issue was identified where the Passbolt iOS application became unusable for regular users after upgrading the Passbolt API to version 5.8.
Administrators are not impacted and could continue using Passbolt iOS app normally. The problem affects onboarding and login flows for regular users on iOS.
Android users and browser extension users are not affected.
A fix has been implemented in the iOS application and is currently under review by the Apple App Store. In the meantime, administrators are advised to wait for the iOS app fix to be released before upgrading to API v5.8 if they have iOS users in their organization.
Impact
During the incident window, regular users of the Passbolt iOS application were unable to complete onboarding or log in after the API was upgraded to version 5.8.
Administrators were not impacted. Users on Android and browser extensions continued to operate normally.
Timeline
- December 22nd, 2025 – Passbolt API v5.8 was released, introducing changes to RBAC endpoints.
- December 28th, 2025 @ 01:00– Issue identified affecting regular users on the iOS application.
- December 29th, 2025 @ 15:00 – Fix implemented in iOS app version 2.5.1 and submitted for App Store review.
- December 30th, 2025 @ 08:15 – iOS app version 2.5.1 approved and released on the App Store, restoring compatibility with Passbolt API 5.8 for all users.
Root cause
The issue was caused by changes introduced to RBAC-related API endpoints in version 5.8, which were not fully compatible with the existing iOS application logic.
Next steps
To reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future, we are taking the following actions:
- Improving compatibility testing between API releases and mobile applications prior to public release.
- Strengthening regression test coverage for RBAC-related workflows across all client applications.
